Chapter 550: Marine Headquarters

Gah, over 600 chapters and I only have to pick 8. Is that even possible? It’s hard so I’ll just have those that pops out off the top of my head.

First would be Chapter 550.

What’s great about this chapter?

That two-page spread of the Royal Shichibukai. Mihawk, Kuma, Doflamingo, Moria and Hancock all lined up at the front line of the Marineford… STUNNING.

The introduction of the third admiral. The Red Dog. AKAINU. And my golly, he’s wearing floral-printed shirt and even have a flower tattoo! So manly! XD Kidding aside, I had goosebumps seeing those three sit beneath the execution platform like nobody’s business. They looked so formidable. So menacing. And I know that they were marine officials but they looked so Mafia-like! Wow. Just WOW.

And the best part of the chapter…

If this is a list of best chapters, this chapter might probably belong to the top 5 or even 3rd best in the entire series. That’s because it holds, what I believe, until now, the biggest plot twist that ever happened in One Piece. No… No. I never seen anything as big of a plot-twist in other mangas like this. This is the biggest plot twist ever written in the history of mangas. Nothing can ever beat this!

Ace is the son of the goddamn Pirate King!

Where the hell did Oda pull that from? It was very SHOCKING! Unbelievable. Mind-boggling. It was just something so UNEXPECTED. I don’t think anyone saw that coming!

Yes, Ace and Luffy aren’t blood related! NANIIIIIII!?!?!?! I had a major headache after that chapter. I almost fainted. My goodness.

Ace, being introduced as Luffy’s brother, naturally, I assumed that he was also Dragon’s son. But my God, no! He’s Rogers! I was initially unsure about how will I respond to this kind of plot twist. But Ace being the only child of the Pirate King perfectly makes sense. 

Portgas D. Rouge, Ace’s mother, was also introduced. A female “D.” at last! And boy, she is one hell of a mother! All my respect!

This chapter is just a proof of how master-mindfucker Oda is. It’s already cliche to say but he’s truly a genius. And this was the chapter where he proved that to everybody.

#1 Monkey D. Luffy

If anyone would actually read what I have to say below, I HIGHLY recommend to listen to this then this then this and lastly this while doing so. :)))

Yoshaa. I finally came to my top favorite One Piece character. And that can only be…

SURPRISE! SURPRISE!

LUFFY! 

Luffy. I said it before, I’ll say it one more time. Luffy is the BEST SHONEN HERO ever created. 

If that isn’t enough, then, just watch or read One Piece. That way, you will understand so much better what sets Luffy above his league. I know it’s cliché to have the main character as the top favorite but it can’t be help. Luffy’s just the best!

And oh, if I may add, prepare for a love at first sight if you do so. That was my case with Luffy. It was pure love at first sight. I fell in love with Luffy’s character hook, line and sinker. He was the first person I loved on the series and after over 600 chapters, over 500 episodes, Luffy is still unshakable in that position.

One Piece is a sea of awesome and badass characters yet Luffy remains to be and will forever be the most EPIC of them all. Whitebeard, Zoro, Garp, Sanji, Usopp, Shanks, Rayleigh, Dragon, Blackbeard, Akainu, Crocodile and even Roger, the Pirate King himself… all are brilliant, badass, awesome characters. YET they can never EVER outshine Luffy. Luffy’s just, plain and simple, the shiznit, the best protagonist in modern shonen history. 

Luffy got the biggest dream. He got the biggest stomach in the history. He got the most legendary hat. And the best smile ever. *look above* :))))

Luffy’s an IDIOT, a genius fighter, HILARIOUS, candid, selfish,  confident, reckless, a leader, a happy-go-lucky, he’s adorable, sweet, HUMBLE, ADVENTUROUS, weird, unique, decisive, bizarre, IDIOT, fearless, naive, innocent, ridiculous, he is CHILDISH, GLUTTON, cool, proud, HONEST, goofy, passionate, non-chalant, gullible, natural, talented, brilliant. Yeah, that’s Luffy. He’s that complex and wonderful of a character.

What I love most about Luffy is his pure, honest and golden family jewels lol joke heart. The guy, despite being a pirate who is supposed to be a bad guy, has a deep sense of humanity. He’ll always put his nakamas on his priorities but if others need him, and it won’t badly affect his crew, Luffy can lend a stretchy hand to anyone. He’s just a good person overall. 

What I greatly admire about Luffy, on the other hand, is the strong conviction he possesses. He said it himself, he’ll be the Pirate King no matter what. He’s bound and determined to do all it takes to be the Pirate King. No questions, no hesistations, no qualms whatsoever. He’s dedicated to accomplish it even if it costs his life. Being a “D.” probably help a lot for him to have that strong of a WILL. But I believe that it’s really just because he’s Luffy. :))

And of course, the one thing that noone can’t fault Luffy, his being a true nakama. Luffy’s nakamas are probably the luckiest people. Once he considers you a nakama, you are his nakama for the rest of your life. And Luffy treats his nakamas as if they are the world’s greatest treasures, the most important valuables. It’s deeply heart-warming and beautiful. 

I don’t believe I already laid down all details why Luffy’s the greatest, why nobody can hate him, why he’s everyone’s favorite. 

So I’ll say it again, Luffy is just the best shonen hero ever created. No, even that makes Luffy underrated. He’s not just the best shonen hero. He is the best human ever. And definitely our future Pirate King.

Top 9 Favorite Characters (8/9)

#2 SHANKS

After appearing in the first chapter of One Piece, I’ve only seen Shanks in, like, less than 10 instances. Yes, his appearance in the entire series, currently the manga spans of 600+ chapters while the anime is into its 500+ eps, can be counted in both hands, yet my deep affection and admiration for Shanks are even bigger and greater than those characters I’m seeing every chapters. Well, except for that boy that tops my list. :))

What I like about Shanks is most definitely his personality. He’s made up of different personas that makes him such an interesting, complicated character.

For one, he appears to be fun-loving, friendly, and cheerful. He also LOVES to party and drink 24/7. I swear. Like, 90% in those few appearances he made, he’s seen either drinking or partying or hosting parties. The only time he showed up and wasn’t drinking was when he stopped the war. I mean, the dude is just a big time drunkard. He even solves his hangover by drinking AGAIN! LMAO. Remember when Mihawk paid a visit? Yeah that’s it. Talking about being a certified ALCOHOLIC. XD

As a captain, he seems to be very fair and care about his crew deeply. I also like that whenever he shows up, his crew is just hanging out in the maddest places in the New World…chilling out and partying. HAHAHA. I really love the Red Hair Pirates that way. Best party animals in the New World! XD

What makes Shanks even more of an interesting character is, despite of his laidback personality as a captain/nakama, he is one of the Yonkous, the four greatest pirates that rule over the New World. And with how chaotic New World has been depicted, that speaks volume of what Shanks is capable of. 

Shanks as a pirate is calm and seem to choose to be calculative of his own moves. He rarely makes impulsive decisions. He’s not cruel yet he won’t ever forgive, for any reason, if you hurt one of his nakamas. 

What I think Shanks’ role in the series is shaping the future generations. Well, he inspired Luffy. He saved Coby. And I have this random idea of him knowing Trafalgar Law personally. He doesn’t seem to aim for the title of being Pirate King he just want to travel the world. But tbh, I believe that Shanks is currently the most powerful pirate in the OP world.

Add all of those and you got one BADASS of a character. Stopping a war by challenging those who still want to continue? Get stronger even after losing an arm? Partying like nobody’s business? Keeps getting hotter and sexier? :P Leave it to Shanks to accomplish all of them like a true BOSS. 

Shanks is still a great One Piece mystery. What Oda plans to do with him in the future? It’s unclear. I only have one great wish for Oda and that is to never ever kill Shanks in the story. I’ve read numerous theories about Shanks dying in the hands of BB for Luffy to have deeper grudge against that bearded swine. I’m sorry but that is just lame, predictable and cliche. Ace already took that role. Luffy doesn’t need another trauma. So Oda, please, never stoop down on that level, alright? If you dare, I’ll fly to Japan and use my Akagami Kenpo against you! :)))

Top 9 Favorite Characters (7/9)

#3 USOPP

That moment when, at Luffy’s command, his Sogeking persona (Yes, don’t be shock Usopp is Sogeking. But please, keep it a secret from Luffy and Chopper. :P) burned the World Government flag without any hesitation… I thought, Yasopp must be one proud Papa. 

That was the shiznit! Really, that will forever be my favorite Usopp/Sogeking moment. 

I can’t really remember the initial reason why I fell in love with Usopp. I learned One Piece, what, 8 years ago? And he was just an instant favorite. I liked him from the get-go! And as the time goes by, that fondness I have for Usopp just became even stronger.

For one, I believe, he is the second funniest character of the show. I don’t know if it’s his lies, his facial reactions to any surprising events, his random and exaggerated claims, I don’t know, but Usopp just got all it takes to tickle my funny bone. XD

Second, I love the idea of sharpshooters, marksmen, snipers whatever term you may use. And Usopp is one of the best marksman of the series. Usopp is definitely not a physical fighter. He doesn’t have the brute and monstrous strength and skills of the Monster Trio. And I really hate all these stupid and lame claims against Usopp being useless and weak just because he can’t fight the way the Monster Trio do. That’s because really can’t. As Oda stated, Usopp is the closest in strength to a REGULAR human so him having the same sane physical strength would ruin the balance. But that doesn’t mean he is useless. Sanji’s line after saving Usopp from Jyabura describes this best. “You do what I can’t do. I do what you can’t do.” As I said, Usopp is a hella fine marksman. Shooting is his FORTE! That’s where he excels. What he do best. That is his role in the crew— that of a marksman. And boy, he got pure RAW skills. He RARELY miss shots, and whenever he does, it’s mostly for comic purposes. And plus, it’s most likely that he got this talent from his father, Yasopp, whom is considered to be the best sniper in the series. I mean, how can you ignore and look down on Usopp’s skill if he gained that from someone like Yasopp. Seriously… 

Also, Usopp’s a natural scaredy cat. And despite that, the guy will bravely face the most formidable opponents especially for the sake of his nakamas. Remember how he got angry when Ms. Merry Christmas claimed that Luffy was dead and even laughed at his declaration that Luffy will be the Pirate King… his epic speech, then, saying that there comes a time that one should fight and that is when his nakama’s dreams are being laugh at. Or what about his desperate try to fight KIZARU, yes, that freakin admiral that is Kizaru, to save Zoro? Or that tearful vow he made to become even stronger and become the real Sniper King to support Luffy? All of these were amazing feats considering Usopp’s personality and abilities. Usopp is an incredibly underrated character. It’s sad.

Last but definitely not the least, how can you not love Usopp when he’s the man responsible for the existence of a superhero who signed an autograph for Luffy and Chopper! He even made the most epic song in the history just within ten seconds..Hyaku patsu. Hyaku chyu! Lu lu la la lu. Usopp is Sogeking. And Sogeking is the MOST AWESOME HERO ever! Enough said! XD

What I want now is for Usopp to have bigger moments, for him to show what a real BEASTLY sniper he really is. I won’t mind an entire arc dedicated to Usopp. Usopp’s future is shining brightly. At the end of One Piece, he’ll be the true Sniper King, a brave warrior of the sea. And `til that day, I am so sure, I’ll still be a Usopp fan.

Top 9 Favorite Characters (6/9)

#4 Tony Tony Chopper

Yes. Out of all the badasses characters I have a soft spot for this über adorable tonakai, damn right, he’s a tonakai not a tanuki! XD I mean, I’m a girl and girls love all things cute. And Chopper’s the cutest of `em all. :)) I am unconditionally in love with the animated Chopper, really. Those squeaky sounds he makes whenever he’s walking, his little giggles, his voice…OMG! His voice! Ikue Otani’s just the perfect seiyuu! Chopper sharing the same seiyuu as Pikachu…how completely adorable can you get? Listen to his song, with Luffy, “Tony Tony Chopper” and you’ll get what I mean.

The cuteness aside, what I always admire about Chopper is the pureness of his heart. Chopper just have the kindest, purest, and the most genuine soul. I believe he shares this place with Luffy. His distrustful of human but that was because of the painful past he had lived. Thankfully, Chopper seems to overcome this especially with the help of the Mugiwaras.

Chopper’s dedication as a doctor is also an impressive point. He will not hesitate on aiding anybody and will put all of his best in treating injured people. 

One of my most favorite moment of Chopper was when he tearfully vowed to become stronger for Luffy. Even if he had to become a true monster he would for the sake of his nakamas. That showed how much he really cares for his friends.

Top 9 Favorite Characters (5/9)

#5 Black Leg Sanji 

Woah! I’m rounding up my top five now! That was fast! :))) 

The honor of seating in the fifth position is none other than Black Leg Sanji. I love the epithet, by the way. Black Leg Sanji. Perfect.

Why do I like Sanji? Oh crap! I really don’t know where to begin.. There are so many reasons entering my mind at once! Damn. Okey…

Yosh! Let’s go. Sanji. Sanji is the smart-dressed cook of the Straw Hats. And as Luffy always claim, Sanji’s meshi is saikou! XD That’s really one thing I first love about him. Isn’t it always a plus point if a guy excels in cooking? :)) And plus, his respect for food is one thing we should all learn. 

Sanji doesn’t only excels in cooking. He is one-third of the Monster Trio, the strongest fighters within the Straw Hats. Although unlike Luffy and Zoro, Sanji was put on spotlight a bit later. He was only publicly acknowledge as a danger after the Enies Lobby incident.

Being anonymous, then, made opponents underestimate him. And I liked that. I mean, you see these opponents ignoring and focusing more on Luffy and Zoro and then BAM! Sanji showed what a true monster he is! He’ll surprise the opponents and show that there isn’t only two beasts in the crew…there’s one more. And it’s him. That makes Sanji such a badass. Underestimate him and he’ll kick your ass…literally and painfully!

Also, Sanji showcased many brilliant moments of using his brains whenever they are in pinch. Remember Mr. Prince? What about closing the Gate of Justice in Enies Lobby? Man, sheer awesomeness.

That just places Sanji above the rest. He’s the smart member of the Monster Trio. He’s a clever decision-maker. A brilliant tactician. A stylish monster. He’s cool, hilarious, frightening, stupid, smart, bizarre, and a true blue pervert lady-lover. A perfect balance of comic relief and badass. Sanji.

#6 Roronoa Zoro

Roronoa Zoro. He got the best name of them all. Really, I believe Oda gave the best name to Zoro  followed by Silvers Fucking Rayleigh. It’s just roll of the tongue flawlessly. It sounds so dangerous. So powerful. So perfectly made for such a man like him. 

Zoro is probably the very definiton of the word BADASS. You won’t know the real meaning of the word if you haven’t meet Roronoa. He’s a stern, intimidating and ruthless swordsman who with a single glare can easily terrorize opponents. He’s just a BEAST in human skin. That’s how formidable he is. Nonetheless, we all know Zoro got a soft side. His interactions with Chopper are strong evidences. Isn’t it just so adorable how he tends and protects Chopper as if he is his younger bro or how Chopper always runs to Zoro whenever he is scared? So precious. :)))

Zoro’s ultimate attribute and the most admirable will forever be his sense of loyalty. I was totally in awe when, as early as the Baratie arc, he displayed such loyalty to his captain by vowing that he’ll never be defeated again, he was just then defeated by Mihawk, because it might put his captain to a dilemma. WOW. Wonderful. It was even solidified during the Thriller Bark arc when he stepped in, without any hesitation, for Luffy. And when he said that his dreams are worthless if he can’t even protect his captain’s dream. Coming from a man who previously said that he’ll take over Luffy if, in any way, Luffy hinders his dreams… that’s just impressive. Zoro is truly one admirable man. 

Seeing Zoro reach his dream of becoming the greatest swordsman is still far ahead but I have all the faith in him and will always be watching as he slowly but surely sail up to the summit.

Top 9 Favorite Characters (3/9)

#7 Nico Robin

The only female in my list. That’s Robin for you. :)) Robin was not a character I thought I would deeply love but I did. She was first introduced as Ms. All Sunday, the Vice President of Baroque Works, and thus was on the other side. She was this hot, intelligent, mysterious cowboy hat-wearing lady who pnwed Tashigi in an instant. She was such a mystery. And the biggest surprise was her joining the Strawhats.

I have to admit, I was one of those who was highly suspicious of her. Even after their Skypeia adventures, I can’t still give my full trust on Robin. And then came the CP9 saga… Robin’s past was revealed. And oh my God! I don’t even know where to begin. Robin’s past was the most tragic backstory ever imaginable. You see this little girl, who despite her incredible intelligence, was outcasted because of the bizarre ability her devil fruit had given her… a girl who only wanted to meet her mom…a girl who only wanted to be accepted…to be loved…to reach her dreams. And yet, everything of her was destroyed in the most horrible way possible. Oh dammit, it’s unbearable. I can never look back at Robin’s past without shedding a tear.

Robin’s past is also one of the, if not the, most significant One Piece plots.  This was the time where we were introduced to the Void Century, the Ancient Kingdom, the significance of the “D.’s”… Robin will definitely be an important key in finding out what One Piece is really about. 

After the Enies Lobby arc, Robin even blossomed so much better as a character. I loved her dark humor, mature personality yet still playful imagination, her calm demeanor… I also loved the fact that Robin’s one kickass of a girl. She’s never a damsel in distress. Her situation in the Enies Lobby arc was different, okey? She knows she’s strong and can break your bone. XD But of course, Robin’s greatest asset will always be her intelligence.

Right now, I am just really in love, even more, with the post-timeskip Robin. She possesses this cool, mafia-chick aura going on. She’s even wears aviators while fighting… talking about SWAG! :))) And yes, Hancock, I’m sorry girl, but Robin just took over your title as One Piece’s most beautiful, in my case, that is. :P

Top 9 Favorite Characters (2/9)

#8 Trafalgar Law (Surgeon of Death)

The Supernovas introduction was one of my most favorite character introductions in One Piece. Law was one of those Supernovas and the first we saw of him was him, with a laidback, smug look on his face, asking Drake how many have he killed. And then, the panel below reads his epithet, “The Surgeon of Death”. The irony. I was like, “This guy’s a doctor!?! Woah! A doctor who carries a sword, has tattoes all over his arms, a fuzzy hat, earrings, asking a question as if it’s just normal to kill..how awesome is that!” In short, I fell in love with the character design. 

And then, just when I thought that his illustration was BAMF enough, he showcased his devil fruit abilities. And boy, what a devil fruit ability he got! I was amazed and totally amused at how ridiculously awesome his Ope Ope no Mi finally we got the name was.

His personality is also a plus. I don’t know but I’ve always like sadistic, calm, enigmatic characters. And Law’s definitely one.

Aside from the obvious, what really drawn me towards Law was the enigma that surrounds him. I predicted then that this guy will play an important role in the OP world, he is now, by the way, as a Shichibukai. And that is because of his eerie interest and strange knowledge about the “D.’s”, even the way he looked at the straw hat was also suspicious, and in connection, his intentions behind saving Luffy.

I have a very random, ass-pull theory about how Law’s really connected with Luffy. And that is Law being Sabo. I have a string of ideas why I came up with this crazy theory. But still, yes, I myself went WTF because it’s so random it’s impossible but I’d still hold on to that idea. :P Ah! I suddenly remember that Oda draw Law as a kid. And he looks far from being Sabo. So just trash that idea. XD HAHAHA. But as of now, he’ll just stay as a solid rival for Luffy. How would his character develop even more, I’ll have faith in Oda. :)))

#9 Captain Buggy! 

Okey, it’s hard to make a list of a top favorite characters from One Piece. All characterr are just wonderfully and uniquely created that you’ll love all of them. But I managed to somehow pick those people I truly adore. The order would be from 9-1, okey? 

I’ll start with my top 9, the flashy clown that is Buggy. Anyone who didn’t laughed at his flawless antics at the Impel Down arc and his ridiculous participation at the Marineford arc is the loneliest person on Earth. Buggy standing in the front of the Gates of Justice, hands-stretched, closing his eyes, and all those idiotic escapees from ID (Luffy included) mistaking him as the next Messiah…seriously, how can you not love Buggy? ROFL.

Buggy’s such a fun character. He’s considered a villain but not really a villain. He’s just this arrogant, treasure-loving, clever, hilarious, party-loving, red-nosed oops, flashy, magnificient, selfish pirate or to use his own words…“I’m just a cheap, worthless scumbag, ya know!” 

He got style. You see that glorious blue hair of his? I’m envious. He even got to last longer than Mr. 1 against Mihawk. XD Muggy Ball FTW! Even Whitebeard, yes, the great Whitebeard, asked to join force with him. What a recognition! HAHAHAHA. And the biggest reason why Buggy’s the best? He’s Shanks BFF. Yeah, he’s that fabulous. :)))

I can’t wait to see him again. This time, as surely as Luffy becoming the Pirate King, we’ll meet again Buggy… the Royal Shichibuka Buggy. :P
